Occupational therapy for mental health and neurodivergence

Personalised occupational therapy support for adults experiencing challenges with mental health and neurodivergence in everyday life.

What is Occupational Therapy?

Mental health occupational therapy is for individuals experiencing a wide range of challenges, from low mood and anxiety through to more complex conditions such as OCD and PTSD. It focuses on enabling people to be able to do the activities, or occupations, that are meaningful or necessary for them in their lives. By understanding where difficulties are arising, we can begin to find practical and realistic ways to support change. This might include managing daily routines, engaging in relationships, and participating in work or hobbies. Engaging more fully in life activities can lead to a reduction of symptoms and an increase in resilience and wellbeing.

Occupational therapy draws on a range of evidence-based approaches which might include; Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectic Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Theory (ACT), Sensory Approaches, Mindfulness and Trauma-Informed Care. I am also interested in, and have participated in training in, Somatic Trauma Therapy and Internal Family Systems (IFS).

Together we work to understand what’s going on for you and develop practical, meaningful ways to support change and improve wellbeing.

How we work together

Our work begins with an initial 90 minute assessment to understand your background, current situation, challenges and what you would like to change or work towards.

I then take time to consider your situation and develop clinical recommendations.

At your next session we discuss these and decide together on ways of working that feel realistic and helpful for you, with a focus on improving how you manage and engage in everyday life.

Ongoing sessions are 55 minutes and can be offered online or, depending on your needs and location, in person.

What we may focus on includes:

  • Understanding what is happening for you and why

  • Finding practical ways to manage anxiety, overwhelm, low mood or other mental health symptoms

  • Identifying the activities that matter to you and adjusting how you engage in them so that they support your wellbeing

  • Developing simple, sustainable routines and structure

  • Learning ways to regulate your nervous system including breathing, grounding and other body based techniques

  • Considering how your sensory experience impacts your life

  • Building a more compassionate and supportive relationship with yourself

  • Exploring how to gently be with difficult sensations and feelings

  • Focussing on being more mindful in daily life

We will review progress together at agreed points, making any adjustments needed to ensure the work remains helpful and relevant. Where appropriate we may also agree that no further sessions are needed.

Rates

For self referred, one to one sessions I offer a sliding scale of £50-80 per hour to allow people with varying incomes to access these services.
